Local Activities

Salcombe

A pretty sailing and fishing harbour with superb sandy beaches, coastal walks, watersports and a wide choice of bistros and restaurants. Visit magnificent National Trust Gardens and Museums at nearby Sharpitor.

Totnes

The 16th century houses that line the steep hill of Fore Street are now shops selling everything from antiques and crafts to local cheeses and organic foods. Learn of the town's history at the Elizabethan Museum, Guildhall and Costume Museum and be sure to see Totnes latest attraction - international hero Pete Goss Boat yard and Visitor Centre at Baltic Wharf. Visit Totnes Castle for wonderful views over the town and take a steam train ride to Buckfastleigh for spectacular views of the Dart estuary.

Kingsbridge

The focal point is the quay, where numerous events, including the weekly markets, take place. Visit the newly refurbished Cookworthy Museum, have a swim in the new indoor pool at the Quayside Leisure Centre and take a ferry trip along the estuary to Salcombe.

Dartmouth

Medieval houses overhang narrow streets and steep steps. The best known landmark is the Britannia Royal Naval College, where our present Queen first met Prince Philip. Shops include art galleries, antique shops and high quality gift shops. Take a boat trip out to sea or along the spectacular River Dart to Totnes. Cross over the river to Kingswear to visit the National Trust Gardens at Coleton Fishacre or enjoy a steam train ride to Paignton.

Beaches

The South Hams
Small historic towns and pretty villages set amidst rolling hills and lush pastures, the romantic wilderness of Southern Dartmoor and miles of breathtaking coastal path, join to make an area of spectacular beauty known as the South Hams. Along the 56 miles of coastal path you'll find small seaside villages, sandy coves and long stretches of shingle and with more award winning beaches in 1998 than any other district in the country, you can be assured of clean, safe bathing for the family. Each of the six towns is unique and each one offers the visitor a different experience.
