Outdoor: The barbecue is in a separate kitchen in an annex, which also has a bread oven. Tables & chairs provided. Garden furniture includes 4 sun loungers with mattresses, table & chairs, drinks tables, parasol.

Boat trips - several companies operate boats from Peniche's public dock. Largest is Viamar ferry (262 78 56 46; fax 262 78 38 47. Ticket booth open 8:30am-5:30pm), which offers 3 crossings per day. (40min.; July-Aug. 3 per day 9:30, 11:30am, 5:30pm; return trips at 10:30am, 4:30, 6:30pm. To stay overnight, buy a €10 1-way ticket each way. May 15-June and Sept. 1-15 10am, returns 4:30pm. Same-day round-trip ticket €15, children age 5-12 €10, under 5 free.) Reserve 3-4 days in advance. Arrive 1 hr. in advance, 2½ hr. in Aug. The crossing from Peniche to the island can be rough. Trips by Berlenga Turpesca (262 78 99 60) include visits to the Berlenga caves. Berlenga Praia (917 60 11 14) also offers crossing.

Tennis: 5 mins' drive away in Alcobaça town centre there is a tennis club by the market hall.

Supermarkets, shops, cafés & restaurants. Market day: Monday. Nearby: The village of Aljubarrota, where the Portuguese defeated the invading Castilian army in 1385, aided by 600 English longbowmen.
NAZARÉ - 20 minutes away: Portugal’s most popular traditional fishing village with locals in costume, fishing boats & a large, beautiful beach with a cobbled boulevard that’s perfect for strolling. Take the funicular up the 110m cliff for a wonderful panoramic view of the town, beach & hinterland.
