Extra Notes on Accommodation
Location

From the earliest towers and dungeons to the elegant grandeur of Culzean Castle, the battle scarred Broddick Castle on Arran, Ayrshire and the Isle of Arran's castles have been the seat of Kings. Although there is little to see now, the castle at Turnberry was the birthplace of Robert the Bruce. He stands as a great figure in Scottish history: crowned King of Scotland in 1306, he spent most of his life fighting to free Scotland from the English. He was the first king to succeed in uniting Scotland in this common cause. The legendary William Wallace was born in Elderslie, he had many supporters in Ayrshire, and many of his early battles and skirmishes took place here. Ayrshire's most famous son - Robert Burns - the ploughman poet and Scotland's bard celebrated annually at Burns Suppers throughout the world. On one hand his life seemed full of wine, women and song. On the other, it was a constant struggle against the grinding poverty of 18th century rural Scotland.

How to get there

Within an easy drive from any of Scotland's international airports, the Turnberry Links is the last word in luxury. Accessed via a tree lined, sweeping driveway, the Turnberry Links enjoys a quiet, secluded location in extensive private grounds. Its position provides a high degree of privacy and allows visitors to take advantage of the beautiful coastal outlook, with some apartments enjoying open views of the sea. Nestling in the wooded privacy of Northcote Estate, these homes are set close to the Turnberry Hotel and its fine facilities.Turnberry is within easy driving distance of all the major Scottish Airports.
. 05 minute drive from Girvan British Rail station
. 20 minute drive from Prestwick International airport
. 30 minute drive from M74 motorway junction 12
. 45 minute drive from Glasgow International airport
From Ayr take the A77 towards Girvan through Minishant and Maybole. Just on the outskirts of Turnberry take left into Milton Wynd which leads to The Links

Beaches

Situated on a magnificent stretch of the Atlantic coastline, Turnberry is one of the great resorts of the world. The spectacular coastline provides pastime opportunities from beach picnics to sea angling, from island-hopping boat trips to watersports. The Outdoor Activity Centre offers leisure activities including shooting, archery, falconry, off-road driving and horse riding
Ayrshire and Arran are great places to bring your walking boots or bike and head off into the open countryside. Walkers have a choice of hill walking and rambling, while Arran poses greater challenges of ridge walking and mountaineering. The National Cycling Network has routes in Ayrshire, passing through some of the most scenic countryside, and making use of off the road tracks and waterside paths wherever possible. If fishing takes your fancy, the mighty river Stincher has prime salmon beats and has admirable back-up from Girvan, Doon and Ayr. There are also dozens of remote lochs which largely remain unfished

Golf

Turnberry with championship Scottish golf courses such as Ailsa, Kintyre, Prestwick and Royal Troon nearby. Long regarded as one of the finest courses in the world, the Ailsa came to international prominence with the famous duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson over the four days of the 1977 Open. Polls now regularly acknowledge the Ailsa as one of Britain's top three courses with regular rankings within the world's top 20 courses. C. Montgomerie says: Turnberry offers the best links golf in the world. Signature hole: Ailsa Course: Ninth (454 yards, par 4) - The championship tee is perched out on a promontory of cliff with a sheer drop of 50 feet. The medal tee is some 40 yards further on but still a spectacular tee shot. It takes a 200-yard drive from the championship tee just to reach the fairway and a white stone marker shows you where to aim for. If you are on this line, playing from the medal tees you will have a shot of about 180 yards to a large green untroubled by bunkers
