Calheta Holiday Rentals Guide
The pretty holiday resort of Calheta is situated along the Madeira Southcoast and boasts the island's only major sandy beaches. The main beaches of Calheta are man-made beaches built in a 'horseshoe shape' with large boulders encasing the 2 main beach areas which divide the sea-water from the the ocean. Calheta is near to Funchal, Madeira's capital and the journey from the airport takes just 30 minutes by car or Taxi.
In Calheta, holidaymakers can enjoy a range of beach activities and watersports including windsurfing and canoeing, directly from either of the Calheta beaches or from the nearby Marina. The 2001 World Surfing Championships were held near to the resort of Calheta, at Jardim do Mar, which is known locally as 'garden of the sea'. Jardim do Mar is a pretty liitle village where huge waves regularly pound the nearby shingle beach. Its a great beach for a walk at anytime.

Calheta is also home to the Casa das Mudas Art Centre which is Madeira's largest cultural venue and the third largest in Portugal. The centre was opened in 2004 and features works by Dali and Sir Francis Bacon. The centre also holds regular theatre, dance and artistic performances within it's auditorium which holds over 200 people. The art centre is well worth visiting for its art and architecture alone.
When visiting Calheta, holidaymakers should enjoy some of the island's natural beauty spots and coastal parts which offer amazing sea and mountain views. The Paul da Serra plateau is not far from Calheta and offers breathtaking scenery, and superb walks.
